Compressive Stiffness Properties of Human Lumbar Intervertebral Discs and the Influence of Strain Rate

چکیده
There have been numerous researchers that have investigated the properties of human intervertebral discs. However, there has been no attempt to characterize the effects of loading rate on the stiffness of human intervertebral discs. The purpose of this study was to develop the compressive stiffness properties of individual lumber intervertebral discs when subjected to various dynamic compressive loading rates.

Stiffness Properties of Human Lumbar Intervertebral Discs in Compression and the Influence of Strain Rate
There have been numerous researchers that have investigated the properties of human intervertebral discs. However, there has been no attempt to characterize the effects of dynamic loading on the compressive stiffness of human lumbar intervertebral discs. Therefore, the purpose of this study was to develop the compressive stiffness properties of lumbar intervertebral discs when subjected to vari...
متن کاملQuasi-static and dynamic properties of the intervertebral disc: experimental study and model parameter determination for the porcine lumbar motion segment.
PURPOSE The study of axial loading is essential to determine the properties of intervertebral disc. The objectives of this work are (1) to quantify the mechanical properties of porcine lumbar intervertebral discs under static and cyclic compressive loading, and (2) to determine the parameters of a five-parameter rheological model for porcine and compare them with those obtained for human lumbar...
متن کاملHuman versus sheep intervertebral disc mechanical and vertebral cortical bone strain properties
INTRODUCTION Obtaining human material for studies of the spine is difficult because of ethical and government regulatory restrictions. Animal models are increasingly being used for research studies of the spine [1], and the sheep lumbar intervertebral disc has been shown to have morphological [2] and biochemical [3] similarities to human lumbar discs. Sheep have been used as a large animal mode...
متن کاملNucleus implant parameters significantly change the compressive stiffness of the human lumbar intervertebral disc.
Nucleus replacement by a synthetic material is a recent trend for treatment of lower back pain. Hydrogel nucleus implants were prepared with variations in implant modulus, height, and diameter Human lumbar intervertebral discs (IVDs) were tested in compression for intact, denucleated, and implanted condition. Implantation of nucleus implants with different material and geometric parameters into...
متن کاملPatient-specific spine models. Part 1: Finite element analysis of the lumbar intervertebral disc--a material sensitivity study.
If patient-specific finite element models of the spine could be developed, they would offer enormous opportunities in the diagnosis and management of back problems. Several generic models have been developed in the past, but there has been very little detailed examination of the sensitivity of these models' characteristics to the input parameters. This relationship must be thoroughly understood...
